Clifford spent 45 days training so he could simulate what hundreds of millions of predominantly girls and women do each day, walking an average of 3.7 miles, to fetch water for their families. The average weight women around the world carry is 49.5 pounds (lbs.). He started his training on May 21, 2018 and could only walk for about 5 minutes carrying the water jug, and he completed his training on June 28, 2018 and rested up to complete the Freedom Walk on July 4, 2018. Cliff walked with a water jug weighing 50.8 lbs. strapped to his head for 3.8 miles along the Dequindre Cut in Detroit from Atwater Street to Mack Avenue and back to the Detroit River front.
Clifford said he was humbled by what girls and women do every day to get water for their families. During his training he began to have tingling in his right pinky finger due to the compression of his spine, nonetheless he completed the training and the Freedom Walk. Until you have walked in the shoes of one of these girls/women you have no idea what they go through each and every day just to survive!
